Cathay Pacific to operate fifth daily flight to Tokyo

Cathay Pacific Airways today announced the addition of fifth daily return flight between Hong Kong and Tokyo, Narita, starting 1 June 2002. The new non-stop service will provide extra choice and convenience to customers on one of the region's most competitive routes, and enhance the airline's ability to offer smooth regional connections though its Hong Kong hub.

With the new flight, passengers and cargo customers will have the choice of two non-stop services both in the morning and afternoon, and one flight that stops in Taipei. There is currently one non-stop departure from Hong Kong in the morning, along with the one stopping in Taipei, and two non-stop departures in the afternoon.

The addition of flight CX520, which departs Hong Kong at 10:40am, and the return schedule CX521 which departs Tokyo at 5:10pm, is facilitated by the opening of a second runway at Narita airport on 18 April.

Routes to Japan have formed a core element of Cathay Pacific's network since the airline first began flying to the country in 1959.

In addition to Tokyo, Cathay Pacific's destinations in Japan include Osaka, Nagoya, Fukuoka and Sapporo. The airline currently operates a total 83 passenger and freighter services each week from Hong Kong to Japan. That number will increase to 90 upon the introduction of the fifth Tokyo flight.

Cathay Pacific Director and Chief Operating Officer Philip Chen said: "Despite difficult market conditions, this is a further indication that we are continuing to build on our strengths of maintaining our core network and investing in a premium service and product. This is also an investment in the future, establishing more choice and frequencies for our customers while ensuring our long-term competitiveness and building Hong Kong's strength as a regional hub.

"Needless to say, Tokyo is one of the most important markets for the Cathay Pacific network and the introduction of the fifth Tokyo service demonstrates our commitment in expanding our business in the Japan market."
