Cathay Pacific I Can Fly 2016 Opens for Application – Hundreds of Students Given the Chance to Pursue Aviation Dreams

Cathay Pacific Airways has announced that the 7th I Can Fly programme is now open for application from Form 3 to Form 6 students in Hong Kong. Over a six-month period starting from March 2016, I Can Fly will offer a series of aviation-related activities to young people who have demonstrated a passion for the aviation industry, giving them a unique experience that may help to shape their future lives.

Leveraging on the resources of the airline and its aviation partners, Cathay Pacific provides I Can Fly participants with the opportunity to learn about many different aspects of aviation, including flight operations, cabin services, airport operations and aircraft engineering. In addition, the students will apply teamwork and leadership skills acquired through I Can Fly to design social service activities, giving them the chance to contribute to the local community.

At the end of the programme, 100 outstanding participants will be invited to join overseas trips to different aviation facilities, giving them new learning experiences along with a taste of other cultures. Some will have the chance to fly a small aircraft while others will learn about the processes involved in building a modern jetliner.

Cathay Pacific Director Corporate Affairs James Tong said: “Cathay Pacific has always placed a strong emphasis on youth education in its corporate social responsibility programme. I Can Fly is one of our major CSR initiatives. Through aviation education and personal-development activities, we encourage young people to care about the community and explore the world.”

The I Can Fly programme gives participants the chance to interact with people from diverse backgrounds, expanding their social circle. Cathay Pacific staff, including pilots and cabin crew, will join graduates from previous programmes to act as mentors to the students. Participants will not only learn more about the professional aspects of various aviation roles, but also gain broader perspectives from people with rich life experiences.

Launched in 2003, I Can Fly has seen some 3,700 students graduate to date. A graduate of the second I Can Fly, Kong Hoi-yan joined Cathay Pacific as a flight attendant after completing her studies. “I have been interested in aviation ever since I was very small. I Can Fly gave me a much more in-depth knowledge of the industry. I learnt about flying theory, the internal operation of aviation organisations, and got to see advanced facilities such as a flight simulator. I also met several Cathay Pacific staff during the programme who inspired me to think about my future. I am delighted to be one of them now!”
