Cathay Pacific and David Turnbull honoured at Hong Kong Business Awards

Cathay Pacific Airways today announced it won two awards at the annual Hong Kong Business Awards organised by DHL International (Hong Kong) Ltd and the South China Morning Post. The “International Award” was accorded to Cathay Pacific for its work in enhancing Hong Kong’s reputation through overseas work. Cathay Pacific’s Deputy Chairman and Chief Executive David Turnbull was honoured with an “Executive Award’ for his outstanding leadership.

The Hong Kong Business Awards were established in 1990 to acknowledge publicly the vital contributions made by individuals and by companies in maintaining and expanding the economic viability and international stature of the territory. At the same time, the awards also recognise excellent standards of corporate management.

Cathay Pacific was selected as the winner of the “International Award” category for having penetrated new markets or substantially increasing its presence successfully overseas in the last five years, thereby enhancing Hong Kong’s international reputation.

In the “Executive Award”, candidates must have made “outstanding managerial contribution to the financial success and harmonious operation” of a company. The winner should also possess superior management skills, including adaptation to changing business environments, setting the example for the organisation and motivating employees.

The airline has recently won a number of awards for its crisis management and leadership during the SARS crisis, including the TTG Honours 2003 and IR Magazine Asia Awards 2003.

Cathay Pacific Deputy Chairman and Chief Executive David Turnbull said: “We are very honoured to receive the “International Award”. As Hong Kong’s airline, it is our responsibility to showcase Hong Kong to the world. We also remain committed to developing Hong Kong as a global aviation hub.”

He also added: “These awards are a credit to all Cathay Pacific staff. Every thing that Cathay Pacific has achieved has been very much a team effort.”
